MMA is pleased to offer a special pre-retreat session this year, presented by a friend and highly recognized speaker on the topic of racism. Regardless of the population you serve, you will learn a lot from this valuable workshop! Pakou Her has agreed to provide the workshop for free to retreat participants.

Understanding Systemic Racism: Exploring Its Impact on Maternal Health
11am-4pm on Friday July 11
Bring a sack lunch

Utilizing a systems analysis of institutional oppression, participants will examine the ways racism impacts maternal health, care provision, and patient wellness. This session will approach the issue of racism as something much larger and more devastating that simply individual prejudice, bias, attitudes, and actions. Session attendees will be given a framework for understanding and analyzing systemic racism, as well as language and introductory assessment tools to begin evaluating the outcomes of systemic racism in the field. We will also focus on the Missouri Midwives Association and its constituents as a case study for in-session analysis.

PaKou Her is Campaign Director at 18MillionRising, an unprecedented Asian American Pacific Islander online organizing and civic engagement organization that leverages technology and social media to build power and community. PaKou joined 18MR in April 2013, bringing 15 years of anti-racism organizing experience and after nearly two years of field organizing with MoveOn.org. She is also principal of Tseng Development Group, a consulting firm that provides lectures, workshops, organizational development, transformative leadership coaching, and grassroots strategy development rooted in People of Color histories and worldviews. Born and raised in the Midwest, PaKou takes great pride representing AAPIs living in the nation’s midsection. Some of her favorite non-campaigning activities include entertaining two young daughters, squeezing in occasional adult-only evenings with her spouse, chasing culinary adventures, and dreaming about reviving a long-lost singing career.
